Solo LeetCode is the most overrated prep activity in software engineering interviews. Not because the problems are wrong — they’re mostly fine — but because the thing that gets graded in a real interview isn’t did you solve it. It’s can you think through a problem out loud, under time pressure, with someone interrupting you.
That’s what mock interviews are for. And for most engineers, mocks are the thing they do least and need most.
Why mocks matter more than solo reps
Four things break down the moment a real interviewer is across the table from you:
- Calibration. You think you know the time-complexity of quickselect. Ask you to derive it while someone watches, and suddenly you’re not sure. Mocks surface the gap between I kind of know this and I can explain this cleanly.
- Verbal reasoning. The interviewer grades your thought process, not your code. Most candidates code silently for 20 minutes and then try to explain backwards — which reads as either rehearsed or confused.
- Pacing. A real interview is 45 minutes. You lose the first 5 to setup and the last 5 to wrap-up. That leaves 35 to clarify, design, code, and test. Solo LeetCode gives you no pacing intuition.
- Interruptions. A good interviewer pushes back mid-explanation. “What if the input is 10× bigger?” “Why that data structure and not a heap?” If you’ve never practiced handling interruptions without losing your train of thought, the first real one will derail you.
What AI mocks get right
AI mock interviewers beat peer mocks on three axes: availability (you can do one at 2 AM the night before), consistency (the rubric doesn’t drift based on who you got paired with), and replay (the full transcript is there — you can re-read where you fumbled, verbatim). For repetition-heavy skills like DSA and behavioral framing, that’s a real unlock.
What peer mocks still beat AI at
Cultural signals. Real pressure. The very specific feel of being interviewed by a senior engineer at your target company who’s bored and skeptical. No AI replicates that yet — and pretending otherwise is how people get surprised on loop day.
The move is to use AI mocks for volume and pattern-matching, then burn your 2–3 peer mocks on the stuff AI is worst at: onsite behavioral rounds and staff-level system design.

They're less useful as a substitute for a senior engineer who's actually conducted 200 interviews at your target company. Use AI for volume; use humans for calibration.
- How many mocks should I do before real interviews?
- For a full loop, aim for 8–12 mocks total across formats: 4–6 DSA, 2–3 system design (if you're L5+), and 2–3 behavioral. More isn't always better — at some point you're just grinding reps instead of fixing specific weaknesses from feedback.
- Should I tell the AI which company I'm targeting?
